Your skincare routine is only as good as your cleanse. Without a clean canvas, even the most high-performing products can’t do their job. Yet, cleansing remains one of the most misunderstood steps in skincare. At Face Club, we see it all the time—well-intentioned routines undermined by small but impactful cleansing mistakes.
Let’s break down the five most common cleansing mistakes and how to correct them so your skin can thrive.
1. Skipping the Double Cleanse
Mistake: One quick wash and you're done.
Reality: A single cleanse often isn’t enough—especially if you wear SPF, makeup, or live in an urban environment.
Why it matters: The first cleanse removes surface-level debris like sunscreen, makeup, sweat, and pollution. The second cleanse removes what's left behind and preps your skin to absorb active ingredients effectively.
Fix it: Start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve oil-soluble impurities. We love the Environ Pre-Cleanse Oil—a luxurious, gentle oil (also acne safe) that melts away makeup and buildup without stripping your skin. Follow up with a cleanser tailored to your skin condition (more on that below).
2. Not Cleansing Long Enough
Mistake: A 10-second rinse and you’re out.
Reality: You should be massaging your cleanser in gentle, circular motions for at least 60 seconds.
Why it matters: This allows the cleanser enough time to break down grime and purify the pores. Still seeing foundation on your towel? You’re probably not cleansing long enough.
Fix it: Set a timer or hum your favourite song while you cleanse—your skin will thank you.
3. Using Only Makeup Wipes or Micellar Water
Mistake: Using wipes or micellar water as your only cleanse.
Reality: These products often contain surfactants that linger on the skin, potentially leading to irritation and a compromised skin barrier.
Why it matters: Without a proper rinse-off cleanser, you’re leaving behind ingredients that can dehydrate or sensitize the skin over time.
Fix it: Use a proper cleansing method. If you wear SPF or makeup, begin with an oil-based cleanser. Then follow up with a gentle, skin-condition-appropriate cleanser to fully remove all residue.
4. Using the Wrong Cleanser for Your Skin Condition
Mistake: Reaching for a foaming cleanser that leaves your skin feeling “squeaky clean.”
Reality: That tight, dry feeling isn’t a sign of cleanliness—it’s a warning that your skin barrier is compromised.
Why it matters: Using a harsh or inappropriate cleanser can strip your skin of essential oils, leading to sensitivity, dryness, or increased breakouts.
Fix it:
-
Dry or sensitized skin? Try a cream-based cleanser like the DMS Cleansing Milk for a nourishing, barrier-friendly cleanse.
-
Skin feels balanced? The Environ Low Foam Cleansing Gel is a gentle yet refreshing option.
-
Acne-prone or oily skin? The Environ Sebu Wash provides a deeper clean—but use it sparingly (2-3 times a week, alternate with Environ Low Foam Cleansing Gel)
Tip: Sebu Wash also works great on body acne or keratosis pilaris (KP).
5. Not Cleansing at All
Mistake: Skipping your cleanse because you’re too tired or think you don’t need it.
Reality: No cleanse = wasted skincare.
Why it matters: Skipping this step means you’re applying your expensive serums and moisturizers onto a layer of dirt, oil, and environmental buildup. That barrier prevents active ingredients from penetrating your skin, reducing their effectiveness.
Fix it: Cleanse morning and night, no matter your skin condition or how “clean” you feel. It’s the foundation of every effective skincare routine—don’t skip it.
