Microneedling is one of our favourite treatments for a reason — the results speak for themselves, and it works across so many different skin concerns. What makes it even more powerful is that the benefits don't stop when you leave the studio: each session builds on the last, and your skin keeps working long after the treatment is done. That's exactly why we don't microneedle a client and send them out the door. We build every client a proper aftercare program, because the treatment only sets the process in motion. What happens over the following weeks is what determines the results you actually keep.

THE FOUR PHASES OF WOUND HEALING

Coagulation & Inflammatory (days 1–3). Micro-channels seal, and blood vessels widen to bring in the immune cells that clear debris and release the growth factors that direct everything that follows. This is what produces the redness and warmth you'll notice right after treatment — a sign your skin is doing exactly what it should.

Lag & Proliferative (days 3–5). New microcapillaries form and skin cells migrate to re-seal the surface. Skin often looks recovered here, even though the deeper rebuilding has barely begun.

Fibroplastic (days 5–20). Fibroblasts lay down new collagen — but it's loose, unstructured, and highly vulnerable to UV and oxidative stress at this stage.

Maturative & Remodelling (day 20 out to as long as two years). That new collagen gradually cross-links into stronger, mature collagen. This is the slow, quiet phase that actually produces the texture and firmness improvements microneedling is known for — and it's just as easy to undermine with sun exposure as the earlier phases.

Your aftercare routine exists to support this process without interrupting it.

AFTERCARE

The skin after microneedling is very susceptible to oxidative stress, making sun protection and antioxidants essential pieces of your aftercare routine. For the first week, it's crucial to avoid actives and exfoliants entirely. A gentle cleanser, an antioxidant-rich moisturizer, and daily SPF are all your skin needs while it recovers. We recommend vitamin A (typically in the form of retinyl palmitate) alongside vitamins C & E, applied daily to support your skin through recovery. Newly formed collagen is fragile and needs to be protected from UV exposure, so daily sunscreen is non-negotiable.

Here's an example of a routine we would recommend for a client on a microneedling series:

Cleanser: Dermaviduals Cleansing Milk with DMS

Moisturizer: Dermaviduals Vitamin Cream Mask

SPF: Odacité SPF 50 Mineral Drops

WHY PRODUCT CHOICE MATTERS AS MUCH AS TIMING

We only recommend products that have been clinically proven to complement a microneedling protocol — formulated free from irritants and designed to work with the wound healing response, not against it. That's a deliberate standard, not a preference: skin in this state absorbs more readily than usual, so what you apply either supports each phase of repair or interferes with it.

That's the thinking behind every aftercare plan our skin therapists build — matched to your skin, your treatment, and where you are in the healing timeline. Staying in touch with your skin therapist between sessions lets that plan adjust as your skin heals, so the results you're building are the ones you keep.
